Scouts and Guides Program in Schools

Bharat Scouts & Guides (BS&G) is India's national scouting and guiding association, a voluntary, non-political, secular educational movement founded on the principles of Lord Baden-Powell. Scouting began in India in 1909 and Guiding in 1911; the modern form was formed in 1950–51. It is recognized by the Government of India as the apex body for scouting and guiding and is one of the most widely run co-curricular programs in Indian schools.
Age Groups / Sections
• Club (boys) / Bulbul (girls): roughly 6–10 years
• Scout (boys) / Guide (girls): roughly 10–17 years – the core school-level section
• Rover (boys) / Ranger (girls): roughly 16–25 years, typically at senior school/college level
Eligibility
• Open to all students without distinction of origin, race, caste, or creed.
• Enrollment through the student's own school if it has a registered BS&G unit/group.
• Age-appropriate section (Cub/Bulbul, Scout/Guide, or Rover/Ranger) based on the student's age.
• Voluntary participation; no restriction based on academic performance.
Program Structure
• Progresses through structured badges and awards – starting with the Pravesh (induction) stage, moving up through proficiency badges, and culminating in top honours like the Rajya Puraskar and the President's/Rashtrapati Award.
• Activities include camping, first aid, community service, nature study, adventure activities, and value education.
• Higher awards require completing prior badges, camps, and community/service projects.
